Apple TV is incredibly weird stuff. It doesn't have a super deep roster, but it has a weirdly high ratio of absolutely must watch shit. I got some free Apple TV when I got an iPad a few Christmases ago, and ended up hooked on For All Mankind - then let it lapse, and now my three favorite shows are all from there. It goes Severance, Pluribus, and now Widow's Bay. They don't seem to be able to produce on any kind of schedule, but then, I don't think they're even trying to. This is exactly what a modern leviathan should be doing with its bulging coffers. As a young man, I was told that Campbell's Chunky Soup was said to eat like a meal. These are shows that watch like books, that benefit very clearly from study.
I sure as hell wasn't looking for a new show. I have a bunch of hot shit on my computer, and I'm also trying to read The Silmarillion. I'm about twenty pages in, and it's taken three trillion years.
Do you remember Broodhollow? It's Kris Straub's old humor/horror comic. It's an incredibly potent combination. Because they emerge from opposite poles, each punch leaves you looking for the next avenue of attack. Widow's Bay is more than a little related: Twisted Americana, in a Lovecraftian vein.
Except it's from Katie Dippold, who worked on Parks and Rec. You know my fascination with lineage - her movie credits are frankly bizarre. Freak shit. But she built up a capacity to direct and shape series television that I think is… I mean, this is one of the best television shows I've ever seen. I've only been watching teevee for forty-six years or so, I guess, but this one stands out. I don't even want to say anything! It's just an incredibly unified, intentional piece and if you are a fan of stimuli you should expose yourself to this one.
At 11am or so, in celebration of the summer's first #Fridabe, we will be back on our (sponsored) bullshit with a potent dose of Once Upon A Galaxy. We've been going hog wild on this, beginning with ladder climb and buildcraft shit until we turn the stream into a blood pit where would-be contenders are smashed against our jagged shoals. We transform cocksure young bucks into dessicated strips of racked meat, similar to jerky. We are also the game's foremost source of novel, useful game lingo and we add to that collection weekly. For the folk etymologist or the young ne'er-do-well, we've got elite product - and you can roll through for the stream at 11am PST.
(CW)TB out.
